What are the best beans in the coffee aisle?
Two distinct type of beans are Aribica and Robusta. Arabica coffee beans are native to higher altitude, rain forested areas. Here the coffee trees are shaded by large trees and the beans come to maturation more slowly than their Robusta counterparts, which are grown at lower altitudes.
The Robusta coffee beans mature quicker. Because they grow quicker, they don't have the chance to develop the complex flavors which is a characteristic of the Arabica bean.
The soil conditions and vintage of the coffee bean can also determine the complexity and overall quality of each bean. If the bean comes from a region where the growing conditions are not ideal due to lack of rain for instance, it may not compare well with a bean grown under optimal conditions. But how is the average coffee drinker supposed to research the vintage and planting location for a particular bean?
This is where your local coffee vendor can help. Because of their slow maturation and nuances of flavor, Arabica coffee beans are often the best bean in the room, but your vendor should be able to steer you towards other good options. Your seller should know of the weather and soil conditions that affected the various blends in the store. Allow him or her to help you in choosing the best beans on the shelves.
Some coffee manufacturers are using the phrase "100% Arabica" on their packages. Although you won't know the details of the beans, generally speaking, a 100% Arabica pot of coffee will be smoother than one made from either Robusta or a blend of Arabica and Robusta coffee beans. Robusta brews can have a more bitter taste, and with less complexity.
You can also choose between organic versus non-organic. Most people will choose an organic bean over a non-organic grown bean, but if you can actually taste the difference, you are in a special league of tasters.
Make sure you make friends with your local coffee vendor or roaster and try to sample all of the varieties and blends. You'll quickly find your favorite as well as good alternatives. And your taste may change from time to time as well. Perhaps you'll prefer a lighter blend in the summer and something heavier in the colder months.
